If you do wish to buy a heating element, you can go to any commercial pet store and obtain a reptile heating mat for relatively low cost.
While we definitely feel that these large pet reptiles make rewarding pets, it’s very true that they are not necessarily the best animals for beginners to the reptile hobby. For obvious reasons, they are also not good pets for people who have limited space, live in compact city environments, or don’t have the physical capabilities to transport such large animals when they need to leave the house (i.e. take a trip to the vet).
Most pet reptiles sold by Backwater Reptiles can live comfortably within a tank or enclosure that maxes out around twenty gallons. However, there are some really amazing reptiles that people keep as pets that grow rather large.

Often we don’t appreciate how long a snake can live when housed in ideal conditions. The pet shops and breeders rarely ever tell us just how much of commitment it really is to care for a snake over the full course of its life. Fact is that snakes (as well as other reptiles) can live long, long lives especially when you compare it to that of other common household pets like cats, dogs, and ferrets. The green iguana is arguably the most common reptile in the pet trade today. Green iguanas are readily available and almost one million are imported into the United States annually as babies. It is true that these wonderful lizards make personable pets, but very few people who purchase them can meet the requirements of an adult green iguana.Iguanas possess atrophied venom glands that produce a weak harmless venom, and they are common pets to reptile collectors. Nevertheless, iguanas possess dozens of sharp serrated teeth. Although bites are relatively uncommon, they can produce serious injuries to faces, fingers, wrists, and ankles. Some of the warning signs of an impending strike by an iguana include standing on all fours, drawing in a deep breath to make the body appear larger, the lowering of the animal’s dewlap (the skin flap under its chin). Some iguanas, however, have been known to strike without warning. The Corn Snake is a quiet and easy reptile to handle. It comes in many different attractive colors and patterns. Pet shop owners highly recommend the Corn Snake for a person getting their first pet reptile since it has a calm demeanor and is easy to maintain and feed. The Corn Snake originates from the Americas and can grow to a mature length of 1.2 to1.8 meters. This pet can live to be 23 years of age in its well maintained and heated enclosure. It has no venom and can be fed with live or freshly killed mice once or twice a week.
