Muddy, what an awesome story that was! Way to take initiative, and show your parents the true nature of your interest, and educating yourself and them in the process. We often tell kids in your situation to do exactly what you did, but most of them would rather not make that kind of effort. Kudos to you, we are proud of you! Pet snakes are definitely not for everyone, but with the right care and responsibility, they can be as rewarding as any other animal, and we think you’ll make a fantastic snake keeper. Keep doing what you are doing, continue giving your parents correct and informed information, and you may find that there attitude toward snakes will eventually become much less antagonistic. We wish you the best of luck finding your snake, and hope you keep us posted on your progress. We like both of your names, and bet that once you find your snake, and become familiar with his personality, the “right” name will be easier to decide. If nothing else, “Buddy” (short for SnakeBuddy) has a nice ring to it. Haha!
Indigo, Thanks for the comment. Snakes are generally great apartment pets, as they take up very little space, don’t make noise, and don’t have to be taken out very often. Musking is a defensive behavior that SOME snakes use, when they feel threatened while being handled. The musk is not a constant smell that anyone would really notice, unless they held your snake, and didn’t wash their hands after getting musked. Most captive snakes calm down quickly to the point where they will very rarely musk their keepers. As long as they have fresh water, a clean cage, and have been fed, most snakes are perfectly fine being left alone for a week. Adult snakes can sometimes go even longer, though it is not recommended.
