On top of that, puppies often arrive in pet stores and their new homes with diseases or infirmities, including:
The one big thing people need to know about Maltese is that they have no undercoat and can freeze to death in the winter if left outside very long, and in the summer they can get sunburned. Maltese are great companion dogs, but not great with small children since they like to pick them up and many times drop them. They usually love people and want to be with them out of the house as well as in the home. They also need to be groomed often, since they are always white in color. Maltese can have a small amount of tan color on their bodies.
Most people love the Maltese because of their small size; however, many of them now are being bred much too large. When someone buys a Maltese they are all very small as puppies but some grow larger because of poor breeding. The average size of a normal Maltese is 5 to 6 lbs and not more than 8 lbs. The dogs that are bigger still make wonderful pets, however.
When puppy mills and backyard breeders flood the market with animals, they reduce homes available for animals from reputable establishments, shelters and rescue groups. Every year, more than 150,000 cats and dogs enter shelters in Washington State-6 to 8 million animals enter shelters nationwide. Sadly, only about 15 percent of people with pets in the U.S. adopted them from a shelter or rescue group, leaving so many deserving pets left behind.

Here at Today’s Pet we work with a committed team of thousands of breeders from all over the United States. Our breeders are experienced professionals, well educated and committed to good animal husbandry. Our breeders love what they do and it shows in the superior quality of their puppies. At no time do we sacrifice the quality of our puppies and use typical “backyard breeders.”After leaving our holding facility our puppies are ready for a safe and stress free trip to our store. Upon arrival at Today’s Pet each puppy is allowed time to adjust to their new temporary home. During this time each puppy is examined by our veterinarian, Dr. Bruce Brown from Liberty Animal Clinic to ensure that each puppy is in optimum health before going home. Our store is AKC approved and inspected annually and we encourage you to visit with us frequently. We have numerous meet & greet “puppy love rooms” for you to socialize with our puppies. Each Today’s Pet puppy is hand selected from various litters by one of our buyers. The puppies Sire and Dam have been checked against our database for any previously reported debilitating hereditary defects within their line which may prevent the puppy from being a companion pet. This minimizes the possibilities that any puppy will experience health difficulties during its life. That cute little puppy you want to buy is from a puppy mill and yes, pet stores WILL and DO lie to you and will tell you whatever you want to hear to make the sale. It happens ALL of the time! In buying a puppy, you’re helping to keep puppy mills in business. Don’t believe me? Educate yourself.
